Things that go bump in the night

[Back][ Forward ]

I’ll admit it. I’m a scaredy cat. I can’t walk across my dark yard without imagining a half dozen things in the dark with me and running for the house.

I have nightmares about scary movies and books that I watch or read. Certain scenes haunt me. After reading a story by Stephen King as a kid, I had to sleep with my closet door open to make sure the boogeyman wasn’t in there.

Yet, I read and always have read an awful lot of paranormal, fantasy, and futuristics. Something about there being otherworldly things out there is fascinating to me. Things that are magical. Fantastical worlds. Vampires. Shapeshifters. Magic. Witchcraft.

I loved getting transported to different realms when I would read as a kid. Probably because I found my own so boring. I lived in my own head a lot and still do. So books that could take my mind into things that didn’t exist in the real world were treasured.

Or maybe I just loved being scared, too.

Did you know just about every society has had some version of a vampire myth or legend? Maybe not exactly like a Dracula, but just about every culture has had something. So I’m not alone in this fascination with scary things. I think it’s because we have preoccupation with the things that frighten us.

When I was working on what I wanted to write, stories with paranormal, futuristic or fantastical elements topped my list of stories. I’ll always have contemporaries both to read and write, but so far their number is small compared to the other things I want to write and read.

So bring on the things that go bump in the night. I’m ready *said as I hide under my blanket.*
