[Back][ Forward]
Now that Mechele knew what she wanted to write (romance), she had to figure out how she…uh, I wanted to write it.
When I came back to reading romance novels a few years ago, I found them much more explicit than the ones I’d read in the past. And I was happy!
I will never forget reading a novel in English in high school. We’d read a chapter and the teacher started the discussion the next day. The heroine in the story had had sex! Now back then, I didn’t know much but I knew it didn’t read like sex to me.
That scenario continued in a lot of my early romance reading. I found myself annoyed as the bedroom door snapped shut or worse, if the language was so ambiguous, they could have been having sex or they might have been picking out lamps. Hard to tell.
I didn’t like certain things left up to the imagination. If the couple had sex, I wanted to know it. I didn’t want to guess. I read a contemporary a few years ago and to this day, I still don’t know if it was a sex scene or a make out scene. And to me, that’s frustrating.
I love sexual tension that pops off the page. That you feel just like the characters do. And when the sexual tension is that ripe, I want that payoff. I want the culmination of the relationship.
When I started writing romance, it was only natural that I would prop the bedroom door open. I truly feel for my writing that the sexual component of a growing relationship is a big part of the developing bond, and one I feel my stories must explore.
I don’t want a mystery about what’s going on. I want each of the sex scenes I write to advance the growing romantic bond between my hero and heroine. And I want my readers to know the characters aren’t picking out lamps.
I take on each story as a challenge. And to make a sex scene hot and push the story forward is a challenge for me. I enjoy it.
Which is why I write erotic to sensual romance. I don’t think I could write what I do any other way right now.
