Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved to write. She wrote with the crayons in her crayon box and when she wasn’t doing that, she played with them in a Crayon Kingdom of her own making. She wrote poetry and short stories.
During all this time, she lived to read and read to live. Teachers actually said she read too much. She loved other world stories, thrillers and romance.
In doing all this reading, she knew what she wanted was to craft stories that had characters that other people could live with and plots they got so wrapped up in, they forgot the outside world.
It became her secret ambition throughout high school and into college.
Only one problem. The genres she was writing in didn’t seem to fit her. It was like trying to stick a box through a round hole. Only she loved the stories and the characters. She kept writing, dabbling at it in her spare time.
She still read but had given up romance to read more “serious” books. She also gave up writing for a very short period of time due to family circumstances. She’d called her parents with some good writing news only to find out her father had a major stroke. Was hard to pick up a pen for a while after that. But not writing only made her more unhappy.
She wasn’t sure she’d ever find her niche in what she so loved to do.
She had two lovely children and in reading to them, it gave her heart wings. She needed to share her love of reading with them. And she found her love of writing again after their birth.
On a weekend trip to the beach, she read four or five of those romances she’d avoided for so long. She remembered how much she loved the happy endings and the desires that were all consuming.
She said, “I can write those!”
Went home and wrote her first romance novel in six weeks. Also, she took a vampire thriller that she’d already written and rewrote the story, making it a romance.
She’d found her niche. She’d come home to once upon a time and happily ever afters.
