I admit it, I think wayyy too much about writing. If I wasn’t already quite off the wall in personality, I would worry about my sanity for all this thinking. My current fascination is where are the lines between lust and love? This is because I write erotic romance and so many times I read ER stories wondering about that line. Is that line crossed and at what point?
I think too often these days the lines are blurred. What was once construed as lust is now often accepted as love. So does this make obtaining a Happily Ever After easier or harder? Do I have to work harder to ensure my readers will be left believing the characters are in lust to stay and in a way that they aren’t going to lust over another any time soon? Mmm… I don’t know, but it sure does keep me thinking. I also think that everyone views the line so differently it can be very hard to satisfy all readers—even all erotic romance readers—with the same story. Doable, yes. But difficult indeed.
One of my most recent releases, Handyman out of Aphrodisia, is getting a bit of mixed results for this reason. Fortunately, the feedback is nearly all positive, but I am seeing a review here and there that says one of the stories is all about lust over love. What is really odd, though, is that the next reviewer says the exact opposite. So where is that line, and did I cross it or not? I guess it really is all in the eye of the beholder. What is your take? Where do you think the line between lust and love are crossed in today’s erotic romances, and do you think there is a difference in this particular genre over other ones?
