Heroines Going Through Hell to Get Their Rewards

[Back][Forward]

As children, we delight in the fantasy worlds depicted in storybooks and movies. From an early age, I enjoyed creating fictional characters and bringing them to life in skits for my family, friends and neighbors. A gathering of stuffed animals and Barbie dolls served as my test audience.

Over the years, my passion for writing intensified. Whether serving as Editor and Features Editor of junior- and senior-high-school newspapers, or filling diaries and journals with my musings, I knew someday I’d pursue a writing career for publication. Those characters and stories were calling to me so strongly. The Sirens had nothing on my Muse when she shifted into vocal mode and reminded me of my fondness for putting story ideas on paper and unfolding those fictional worlds.

This storytelling passion is how Helle Hawthorn’s character came to life. When younger I marveled at the comic book heroes and heroines whose bravery and quest for justice remained unflagging in the face of danger and personal devastation. I wanted to create my own super-heroine. A woman who fit the modern sassy mold, defended her loved ones and friends, put the welfare of others first, cherished her independence but also desired a romance with the man of her fondest dreams.

Of all things to spur my creativity one morning, the family coffeemaker can lay claim to Helle’s genesis. As the brewing cycle continued, a strange guttural noise erupted from the bowels of the brewing unit. A sound unlike any I’d ever heard. I was in the middle of focusing on something else and lost the thought when the noise repeated, and I wished the filter-dripping demon back to where he belonged. No sooner did I vocalize this banishment. and the idea for my spitfire heroine, Helle, emerged. Much as I banished the non-existent java entity to Hades, she would become the Devil’s daughter and be banished from Satan’s kingdom. Once my travel mug filled with coffee, I grabbed my laptop and headed back to the master bedroom for over five hours while Helle’s plight and adventures scrolled across the computer screen.

Each time I create characters, primary and secondary, the process changes a bit. Same goes for my plotting. But the day Helle came to mind, I knew her erotica romance would become one of my favorites of those stories I’ve written. Life presents so many possibilities, among them endless possibilities for us writers. The sensorial stimuli which we’re all bombarded are blessings. It’s up to all of us to nurture our creativity and answer its calling, whether for professional publication, family entertainment or self-satisfaction.
