Howdy all, Vonna Harper poking out from behind her computer and saying, "What's happening?" I hate having to admit this, but I'm new to Novelspot. There are so many sites on the Net for writers and I tend to stick with the same old, same old, but thanks to Allie, I now have some new victims, ah, browsers to bore with the details
Starting somewhere, who the h--- is this Vonna Harper broad? Truth is, that's not my real name. It's the one I stumble on when I started writing erotica. Before jumping into the sexy stuff, I'd written rocategory romance and straight historicals under my own name, but this erotica stuff was so different, I decided to hide behind this figment of my imagination. I still don't quite believe I'm writing erotica given how I got started in the publishing world, but that's not what I want to write about today.
The title of this is How I Got Here because I decided to start at the beginning. Back in the dark ages when I was a child, I lived in a rural and isolated one-horse town (actually we had to share the horse with another little joint) and went to a one-room schoolhouse. Because we lived in a canyon, no TV reception reached us and radio wasn't much better, but what did I care. I had BOOKS. Raised by my grandmother and mother, both teachers, it wasn't surprising that I was drawn to the written world. Books written for girls didn't hold much appeal but boy did I did adventure stories designed for boys.
Reading wasn't enough. I wanted to live those adventures. And when that didn't happen, I started thinking about making up adventures and putting them down on paper. Okay, so I was clueless, but the obsession had taken hold and that has never changed. I started by writing and illustrating comic books with the Lone Ranger's horse Silver as the hero and my younger sister as my only audience. I remember going into the only store in town and staring, not at the candy counter, but a box of stationary. I longed to put my words on that fancy paper, but because it wasn't in my mother's budget, I settled for ruled school paper. Day after day I'd stare out the classroom window daydreaming about becoming someone older, braver, and more adventurous than I was.
I didn't know that the core of a writing career was taking root back then. All I knew was I HAD to express myself and the written word was how to get that done. Addiction? That's one I've never regretted.
