Review:

Perian, a Drevnyan Keeper, and Randrik Alt Harbinnen, a Magi, are wed and continue their search for the talismans that have been foretold: items that will ensure the destruction of the god Azdrefel, the 'Souleater'. There will never be peace in their lands until he has been driven back into the Everdark.

Hiding the fact that she is pregnant from her mate, Perian fears he will try and stop her from completing their quest. Hard-learned lessons from her past make it hard for her to trust no matter what her heart tells her is truth. Randrik knows she's keeping something from him. He could force her to tell him but he wishes nothing more than to protect her, though she does not wish for it; he desires the chance to love her and cherish her for all time, though she refuses to allow herself to see.

The Chief Mage from the Tower of Sorcerers, Darak, finds them on their quest, divulging the capture and torture of those closest to them. The trio travels quietly through the Old Forest and silence is a good thing when you are evading the sentries of Everdark; sharp-eared Harpies, poisonous Hounds and secretive Watchers are but a few of Azdrefel's servants traveling the land in search of the intrepid duo. Having learned more than they wanted about the devious and treacherous Lord of Everdark and his fortress, Darmain, Perian and Randrik part ways with the Mage, continuing their journey in disguise.

Captured at the Temple Hold, Perian's old school, they are separated by an encounter with the Hounds. Perian is whisked to the citadel of Darmain, with its ever-changing walls and corridors, and the despicable dark Lord of Everdark, waiting to enter his chosen 'life' vessel, the offspring of these two powerful lovers. Randrik follows a treacherous path in search of his love, deceived by one he saved and trusted and tortured by both rape of the body and well as the mind.

Will their love sustain them in their confrontation with the heartless dark Lord? What will it cost them to send the vile god entity into the depths of Everdark--their connected souls or, perhaps, their innocent and precious child?

Elizabeth Burton combines the perfect elements of fantasy and romance in this second book of her Everdark Wars, THE SHADOW OF THE SCORPION. A well-woven tale that is rich with characters, she pulls us into her world of darkness and despair, of heroes and heroines willing to sacrifice all. You will find yourself cheering for Perian and Randrik, dealing with an uncertain marriage and a newly discovered love, as well as the possible destruction of all they hold dear if they should fail to destroy this vicious 'Souleater'. A perfect good over evil saga that will make your heart pound and your eyes tear. I can hardly wait to see what the third book will bring.
